Today I’m handing the blog over to Kalli Lanford, the author of Gamma Rift.

Hey, I’m Kalli Lanford, author of the new adult novel GAMMA RIFT. Much of GAMMA RIFT takes place on a planet called Enestia when my main character, America, is abducted by aliens and taken there. Enestians are very humanoid in form, and although America does not have to battle giant, insect-like creatures with two sets of jaws and acid for blood, she is strong and innovative, so she reminds me a bit of a younger Ellen Ripley from the Alien movies.

I love that series of movies, but my favorite is actually Aliens (plural), the second movie in the franchise. My favorite line from the movie is when the “queen” alien threatens Newt, and Ripley, says, “Get away from her, you bitch.” Ripley enters the scene in some type of industrial robotic exoskeleton with hydraulic arms for lifting cargo and heavy equipment and a blow torch for welding. Basically, she looks like a transformer. So awesome!

I remember watching the first movie, Alien, on VHS (remember those) years after it was released (It’s rated R, so my parents wouldn’t let me see it when it first came to theaters), and I was so impressed that the main character of a sci-fi, futuristic, action flick was a woman, and a woman who kicked ass. That’s what I wanted America to be. America’s aliens may not be of the same caliber, but they are comparable to humans when it comes to cognition, so they are cunning and curious. She never succumbs to the ill treatment she receives on Enestia. She is a fighter and does what she can to survive and in the process actually finds love.

I actually saw the actor who plays Ripley, Sigourney Weaver, at Comic-Con a few years ago when she was promoting Avatar, and I was so impressed with her intellect and how articulate she was. In fact, after the panel finished, I was left feeling like Sigourney Weaver is as kick ass as Ellen Ripley.

My goal when I write is to develop strong, female heroines who are looking for love but don’t rely upon it. I can only hope that my readers agree and are taken on an incredible journey when they read GAMMA RIFT.

His secret (alien) crush…

I may be a Prince, but there are things that trouble me about my father’s royal rule-the forced abduction, experimentation, and torture of alien creatures. The king has a new prisoner who’s a carefully kept secret…

There’s a young female who belongs to a little-known civilization I have been studying extensively. They are human, belonging to a small, undeveloped planet called Earth. She is pretty in a way I find unusual and compelling. Sometimes I sneak into the adjoining cell and we talk about everything and nothing, even as I find myself yearning to touch her strange, soft skin.

Skin that is being subjected to invasive tests and experiments. A body that’s scheduled for a live dissection in fifteen days. And a life that will be terminated unless I risk my future and life to help her escape…
